A tall, rectangular, multi-storey stone tower house set on a low grassy mound, constructed of grey rubble masonry with lighter squared quoins at the corners. The tower rises with narrow vertical slit windows and a taller rectangular window opening, topped by a crenellated parapet now broken in places and partly overgrown; the base is partly obscured by shrubs and ivy. The immediate setting is an open lawn edged by mature deciduous trees.

Dunkerron began as a Norman stronghold: the four-storey tower house was built in the 13th century on a limestone outcrop at Templenoe, near Kenmare in County Kerry, by the Carews. From the late 16th century it served as the family seat of the O'Sullivan Mór.
The main O'Sullivan Mór seat moved to nearby Cappanacush Castle during the 17th century, and the antiquary Samuel Lewis noted that both castles were "traditionally said to have been defended" by their O'Sullivan Mór owners during the mid-17th-century Cromwellian conquest of Ireland. The British monarchy later issued the peerage title of Baron Dunkeron to John Petty. Today the tower still rises from its low earthen mound in a park-like setting, retaining parts of its crenellated roofline and narrow window openings, though largely overgrown.
