Arechi Castle
Arechi Castle crowns a rocky ridge above Salerno in southern Italy; its oldest ramparts date to Byzantine construction and it became the fortified seat of the Lombard ruler Arechi II. The site preserves long curtain walls, a prominent rectangular keep and a watchtower to the north, and today contains a museum and visitor areas after mid-20th century restoration. It is a landmark visible from the city below.

As it stood in 774
The shape it held in its prime.
Perched on a steep limestone ridge, the castle is an elongated, irregular complex of pale sandstone curtain walls running along the crest, punctuated by a large rectangular multi-storey keep at one end and smaller towers along the line. Within the walls are terraces and a central open courtyard bounded by arcaded masonry; a separate small watchtower stands on a northern spur overlooking the gulf. Pathways and stepped approaches zigzag up the rocky slope to the main gate.
