Amalfi Cathedral

Duomo di Amalfi

Amalfi Cathedral (Cattedrale di Sant'Andrea) is the medieval Roman Catholic cathedral in the Piazza del Duomo in Amalfi, Italy, dedicated to the Apostle Saint Andrew. Built from the 9th century onward, the complex contains the adjoining Basilica of the Crucifix, a Romanesque bell tower with polychrome majolica, a crypt housing Saint Andrew's relics, and a cloister known as the Chiostro del Paradiso.

What Amalfi Cathedral looked like in its prime.

A stepped approach of sixty-plus broad stone steps leads to a broad Romanesque façade banded in alternating dark and light stone. A deep three-arched porch with Moorish-style pointed arcades opens to bronze doors set in a rounded portal; above, a pedimented gable would once carry a mosaic. To the left rises a tall multistage campanile capped by a central turret and four small round turrets, its upper courses veneered with green and yellow majolica tiles. The complex sits tightly between townhouses, with cloistered arches to the side.
