Sanquhar Castle
Sanquhar Castle is a 13th-century stronghold northeast of Dumfries in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, originally built by the Ross family and later held by the Crichtons. It occupies a defended mound overlooking the River Nith and fell into steady ruin after the 17th century; the site is a scheduled monument.

Perched on a grassy mound above the River Nith, Sanquhar Castle in its prime presents two main stone blocks: a taller rectangular keep to the west with vertical window openings and a lower range of domestic buildings to the east joined by fragments of curtain wall. Walls are of local sandstone, showing areas of coursed ashlar and rubble masonry; a deep defensive ditch and earthworks encircle the mound, with rolling pasture and forested hills falling away to the river valley to the west.

Sanquhar Castle was built in the 13th century by the Ross family on the southern approach to the royal burgh of Sanquhar, overlooking the River Nith. The stronghold was bounded by the Nith to the west and a burn to the north, and made strong by a deep ditch running the remainder of its boundary.
The castle passed to the Crichton family in the 14th century, and the Crichtons sold it in the mid-17th century to Sir William Douglas, 1st Duke of Queensberry — who established the fairytale pink sandstone Drumlanrig Castle ten miles to the south. Sanquhar fell into steady ruin after the 17th century; the site is now a scheduled monument on the trail of the Southern Upland Way.
