Castelldefels Castle
Castelldefels Castle is a hilltop fortress near Barcelona whose present fabric dates largely from 16th-century coastal defences, with a prominent circular sandstone tower and an enclosed bailey containing a church, keep, outbuildings and a cemetery. The complex was refurbished with decorative crenellations in the late 19th century and later restored by the municipal council.

A compact hilltop fortress of two main keep buildings within a continuous curtain wall, dominated by a high, cylindrical red sandstone tower on the southeast; the western keep is a bulkier rectangular block with beige, plaster-coated masonry. Crenellated parapets and small round corner turrets punctuate the roofline. The complex sits on a vegetated, terraced hilltop above the town, and includes a fortified church and lower outbuildings clustered in the southern bailey.

Castelldefels Castle was built as a frontier fortress of the Carolingian Empire against neighbouring Muslim territories, particularly the Caliphate of Córdoba, and was first recorded in AD 967. The hilltop had been occupied long before — archaeologists have excavated a Laietani settlement of the 3rd to 1st centuries BC and a Roman villa — and the church of St Mary was built here in the 10th century by the monastery of Sant Cugat, instructed to develop the region by Sunyer, Count of Barcelona.
By the 14th century a fortified house stood within a strong curtain wall; the castle as it stands today was largely built in the 16th century as a response to the expansion of the Ottoman Empire. Ruinous by the second half of the 19th century, it was bought by Manuel Girona, a powerful Barcelonan banker and politician, who refurbished it and added decorative crenellations throughout; a notorious 1893 murder of the parish priest and his niece in the rectory ended with the killer executed outside the castle walls in 1895.
During the Spanish Civil War the International Brigades used the castle as a disciplinary prison camp: Ćopić ordered 60 prisoners shot to reduce their number, and torture and executions were carried out here in the months that followed. Ownership passed to Castelldefels municipal council in 1988; the complex, dominated by a high circular tower, encloses church, keep, outbuildings and a cemetery within its curtain wall.
