The keep reaches about three storeys with narrow slit windows; the curtain walls step down the rock and enclose a compact place-of-arms. The main entrance is an arched opening set into the curtain with an iron grille; the parapet line is defined by projecting corbels and crenellations, and stonework shows vegetation in joints.

According to ancient sources the building had a tunnel connecting the Andrade family's house with the castle, so that members and relatives could seek refuge there in periods of war.

Its most famous owner was Fernán Pérez de Andrade, lord of Pontedeume and Ferrol, who remodelled the castle in the fourteenth century and to whom Henry II of Castile granted all the lands running from the castle to Cabo Prior beyond Ferrol.
