Lviv High Castle

The Lviv High Castle was a medieval stone-and-brick fortress that stood on Castle Hill above the city of Lviv; it served as the city's principal defensive stronghold from the 13th century into the early modern period. Today the castle survives only as ruins and the hilltop is a public park and viewpoint where a mound and later structures were built.

As it stood in 1450

The shape it held in its prime.

Perched on the summit of Castle Hill, the castle presents a ring of thick stone-and-brick curtain walls pierced by narrow arched window-slits and topped by crenellations, with several massive cylindrical towers rising above the walls and capped by steep conical roofs. The whole complex sits on a raised rubble retaining terrace with a winding path up the slope; the silhouette is dominated by the tallest round keep and an irregular roofline of connected ranges and towers.
