What Caerau Hillfort looked like in its prime.
A broad triangular ridge‑top plateau defended by multiple concentric earthen ramparts and accompanying ditches; the steep north and south slopes are ringed by three massive turf-and-soil banks, while the east side shows fewer banks (two in the north, one in the south). The ramparts curve at the eastern approach to command the way in; a western/southern entrance lacks a pronounced inturn. The interior is a flat grassy plateau crossed by two linear earthworks and an eroded north‑west apex where spring water has cut into the bank.
Its story
The story of Caerau Hillfort.
Caerau is a large triangular multivallate Iron Age hillfort occupying the western tip of an extensive ridge-top plateau in the western suburbs of Caerau and Ely, Cardiff, built on a previously occupied Neolithic site. It is the largest Iron Age site of its type in south Wales and one of the largest in Great Britain, once a stronghold of the powerful Silures, the tribe who inhabited this part of Wales before the arrival of the Romans.
Within the hillfort, on its north-eastern side, stand the ruined old parish church of St Mary and a small ringwork, almost certainly a medieval castle site, probably contemporary with the church: a medieval castle planted inside a prehistoric stronghold.
