Hay Castle
Hay Castle is a medieval fortification later enlarged with a 17th-century Jacobean mansion, sited on raised ground overlooking Hay-on-Wye in Powys, Wales. The site preserves a medieval keep and a long stone mansion facade and has formal terraced gardens and walled kitchen gardens to the southwest. The restored building now serves as a centre for arts, literature and learning and is a Grade I listed site.

The shape it held in its prime.
A composite silhouette of a medieval stone keep at the left (thick masonry, small slit windows and a large arched gateway) joined to a long 17th-century Jacobean stone mansion to the right with a two- to three-storey facade, a row of seven gabled dormers, tall rectangular sash windows and a prominent tall red-brick chimney; the building sits on terraced stone retaining walls above the street with clipped yew topiary on the terraces and a freestanding commemorative column below.
