The Arc de Triomphe is a monumental neoclassical triumphal arch (a tetrapylon) standing at the centre of the Place de l'Étoile at the western end of the Champs-Élysées in Paris. Erected in white/pale limestone with large applied sculptural groups, bas-reliefs, an attic frieze of shields and names inscribed on the inner faces, it marks the culmination of a long urban axis and contains interior vaults and a stair to an upper terrace.

Massive tetrapylon silhouette of pale ashlar limestone, about 50 m high, with four squat square piers supporting a deep central coffered vault and two smaller lateral vaults. Each pier bears a high-relief sculptural group on its outer face and rectangular bas-relief panels above; a broad entablature and an attic band of thirty shield motifs run around the top. Surrounded by a large star-shaped radiating avenue plan, the stone is smoothly worked with crisp edges and carved lettering on inner walls.
