Sacré-Cœur

The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Montmartre (Sacré-Cœur) is a Catholic church and minor basilica occupying the summit of the Montmartre hill in Paris. It is a large Romano-Byzantine–inspired basilica dominated by a central ovoid cupola surrounded by four smaller domes, a north campanile and a triple-arched south porch, built of very white travertine limestone and arranged on an elevated terrace above a broad lawn and steps.

The shape it held in its prime.

A gleaming white travertine basilica set on a raised terraced platform above a broad green lawn and wide stone steps; an enormous elongated central dome (cupola) rises to the skyline with four smaller domes at its corners, a tall north bell tower, and a triple-arched south porch framed by bronze equestrian statues. The façade is carved stone with rounded Romanesque arches, balustraded terraces and a series of semicircular vaulted arches beneath the terrace.
