Aula Palatina

Konstantinbasilika

The Aula Palatina (Konstantinbasilika) in Trier is a monumental Roman palace audience hall of the early 4th century, later converted to church use. It is a single, rectangular brick-built hall with a large semicircular apse and the largest surviving vaulted classical-era interior hall in northern Europe.

What Aula Palatina looked like in its prime.

A massive red-brick, box-like hall 67 m long and about 27 m wide, terminating in a high semicircular apse. Exterior walls rise as a thick solid mass with a regular rhythm of tall round-arched clerestory window openings and a pronounced roof cornice/frieze. Interior is a single vast, uncolonnaded space with polished opus-sectile marble floors to the window cornices, marble wall veneers to mid-height, stucco above, and a broad, coffered wooden ceiling; deep window reveals and very thick brick walls (c. 2.7–3.4 m) frame the light.
