Achilleion

The Achilleion is a late 19th-century palace on Corfu built for Empress Elisabeth of Austria and named for the Greek hero Achilles. It occupies a hillside at Gastouri with formal gardens, sculptures, terraces and a symmetrical pillared façade; it currently operates as a museum.

A symmetrical, two-storey pale-cream palace in classical Mediterranean form: a broad central portico with tall fluted columns and an entablature, balustraded terraces and upper balconies with wrought-iron railings, multiple classical statues on terrace plinths, and flat rooflines with decorative cornices. The building sits atop formal gardens planted with palms, cycads and cypress, a low stone balustrade with urns and flowerbeds on the front lawn, and paved approaches sheltered by the portico.
