Butrint is an archaeological site on a low coastal headland in southern Albania that began as an ancient Greek polis and later became a Roman colony and Byzantine bishopric. The ruins include a semicircular theatre, forum and baths, a large baptistery with a mosaic, several basilicas, a late-antique palace and multiple fortifications overlooking the Vivari Channel.

Perched above the Vivari Channel, the site centres on a semicircular stone theatre: tiered pale-grey limestone seating drops to a broad orchestra before a multi-arched brick-and-stone stage building. Surrounding the theatre are rectilinear foundations, low masonry walls, pools and sunken basins; larger masonry blocks and ashlar walls alternate with reddish brick facing. In prime the terraces and courtyards link to basilicas and a baptistery with mosaic floors; the whole complex sits against low wooded slopes and marshy water margins.
