The shape it held in its prime.
Low, rectangular stone fortress sitting on a marshy spit at the mouth of a broad channel; thick, pale grey-beige curtain walls with a few angular projecting massed towers and low parapets punctured by rectangular embrasures; a central low gateway reached by a short causeway across reed-fringed pools; the building reads as a stout, squat block with minimal roofline, set amid interlaced tidal channels and small vegetated islets.
