Temple of Hephaestus

The Temple of Hephaestus is a Doric peripteral marble temple on the Agoraios Kolonos hill at the northwest side of the Athenian Agora, dedicated to the god Hephaestus. Constructed in the mid-5th century BC and later used as a church, it survives largely intact with its surrounding colonnade, cella and sculpted pediments.

A rectangular, hexastyle Doric temple of pale Pentelic marble sitting on a three-stepped krepis atop a small tree-studded hill. Six fluted columns on the short ends and thirteen along the long sides form a full peristyle; a low-pitched marble roof and sculpted pediments cap the entablature. The pronaos and opisthodomos display continuous Ionic friezes, an inner Doric colonnade frames the cella, and a stone altar sits before the east steps.
