White Tower of Thessaloniki
The White Tower of Thessaloniki is a cylindrical Ottoman-era fortification on the city's waterfront, now a museum and symbol of Thessaloniki. The present stone tower replaced an earlier Byzantine work and was long used as a fortress, garrison and prison before becoming a civic monument.

A squat cylindrical drum of pale ashlar masonry, about 23 m across and 34 m high, topped by a smaller round turret; the upper circumference has a band of corbelled arches and crenellated parapet with regular embrasures. The stone surface shows coursed blocks and small slit windows; the turret supports a circular observation platform and a tall flagpole. At the base are trees and a flat seafront approach; defensive outworks (a chemise) once surrounded the tower.
