Ostia Antica is the excavated site of the ancient Roman port city at the mouth of the Tiber, located southwest of Rome. The archaeological area preserves streets, public buildings, baths, warehouses and houses with well-preserved masonry, mosaics and frescoes that illustrate Roman urban life.

A compact Roman port town of brick-faced concrete and tuff walls, marble and porphyry columns with carved Corinthian capitals, and broad paved streets lined by multi-storey insulae with red terracotta roofs. Public squares and baths open onto colonnades and forums; warehouses and horrea are solid brick blocks. The palette is ochre brick, white marble, and dark green umbrella pines on the skyline; many walls stood several metres high while roofs were tiled in red clay.
