Zaanse Schans

Zaanse Schans is a conserved neighbourhood and open-air museum near Zaandam in the Netherlands, notable for a cluster of historic timber houses and several traditional windmills brought together for preservation. The site contains shops, working mills and small museums (Cheese Factory, Wooden Shoe Workshop, Bakery Museum, Pewter Foundry and the Zaans Museum) and is visited as a single walkable heritage area.

What Zaanse Schans looked like in its prime.

A low riverside village of closely spaced green- and black-painted wooden houses with white scalloped gable trim and red clay tile roofs, interspersed with tall dark timber windmills with broad wooden sails. Narrow grassy lanes, picket fences and small wooden jetties meet a reflective canal; mature trees dot the flat polder landscape. Building facades are timber-clad with mullioned windows and occasional shopfronts facing visitor paths.
