Vondelkerk

The Vondel Church (Vondelkerk) is a neo‑Gothic cruciform basilica on Vondelstraat in Amsterdam, designed by Pierre Cuypers and completed for liturgical use in 1880. It served as the Roman Catholic Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and later as a cultural centre. The building suffered major fires in 1904 and again in 2026 that destroyed the tower and parts of the nave; the masonry walls remained and restoration has been judged possible.

A freestanding neo‑Gothic brick cruciform basilica set on an oval island, built in banded dark and lighter red brick. The façade has a pointed-arch main portal beneath a stepped gable, tall lancet stained‑glass windows and buttressed side aisles; an octagonal crossing supports a steep timber bell tower above slate roofs. Interior vaults have yellow fields with green-and-white ribs and rows of banded brick pillars; overall scale is that of a city parish church with a dominant central tower present at its prime.
