Vasa
Vasa is a Swedish warship built 1626-1628 at the Stockholm navy yard on the orders of King Gustavus Adolphus, armed with bronze 24-pounder cannons on two full gundecks and decorated with close to 500 painted sculptures. Dangerously top-heavy, she sank roughly 1,300 m into her maiden voyage on 10 August 1628. Salvaged with a largely intact hull in 1961 after 333 years on the harbour floor, she is preserved at the Vasa Museum in Stockholm and has been seen by over 45 million visitors.

Ordered for a king's war
Vasa was built as part of the military expansion Gustavus Adolphus began during Sweden's war with Poland-Lithuania of 1621-1629. Until the early 17th century the Swedish navy was composed mostly of small to medium single-gundeck ships armed with 12-pounders and smaller guns, cheap vessels well suited to escort and patrol and to a tactical outlook that still treated boarding as the decisive moment of a battle. The king was a keen artillerist and saw the potential of ships as gun platforms. Beginning with Vasa he ordered a series of ships with two full gundecks and much heavier guns.
The decade gave him reason to hurry. In 1625 a squadron cruising the Bay of Riga was caught in a storm and ten ships ran aground and were wrecked. At the Battle of Oliwa in 1627 a Swedish squadron was outmanoeuvred and beaten by a Polish force: the admiral's flagship Tigern was captured, and Solen was blown up by her own crew as she was boarded. In 1628 three more large ships were lost in less than a month - Admiral Klas Fleming's Kristina wrecked in a storm in the Gulf of Danzig, Riksnyckeln aground at Viksten, and Vasa herself.
On 16 January 1625 the Dutch-born shipwright Henrik Hybertsson, known as Master Henrik, and his business partner Arendt de Groote signed a contract to build four ships at the Stockholm navy yard. Timber was bought from individual Swedish estates, with rough-sawn planking from Riga, Königsberg and Amsterdam; the rigging hemp came through Riga and the sailcloth most likely from Holland. Hybertsson laid the keel of the larger ship in late February or early March 1626, fell ill, handed the yard over to another Dutch shipwright, Hein Jacobsson, and died in the spring of 1627, probably about the time his ship was launched.
Fifty-six guns and no plans on paper
The king ordered seventy-two 24-pound guns on 5 August 1626, far too many for a single gundeck; the order came less than five months after construction started, early enough for a second deck to be part of the design. The final decision was 56 24-pounders spread over two decks. What made Vasa arguably the most powerful warship of her time was the combined weight of shot from one side: 588 pounds, or 267 kg. That was the largest concentration of artillery in a single warship in the Baltic, perhaps in all of northern Europe, and it was not exceeded until the 1630s.
The firepower was possible because the 46 main 24-pounders were of a new standardised lightweight design, cast in a single series at the state gun foundry in Stockholm under the Swiss-born founder Medardus Gessus. Every barrel came from its own single-use mould, yet their bores were almost exactly 146 mm - remarkable at a time when ships did not own their guns but were issued a mixed bag from the armoury each campaign season. The guns were arranged along the curve of the hull to fire independently in all directions rather than as a unified broadside. Eight of the planned 72 had still not been delivered when she sailed.
The bottom of the hull was built by the Dutch bottom-based method: the planking was shaped and fitted edge to edge before a single floor timber went in, so the planks themselves dictated the shape of the hull. The finished appearance is carvel, but the philosophy is shell-first like clinker, and the plugged holes from the temporary cleats that held the planks are still visible. The method, as far as is known, involved no plans on paper at all. Vasa also carries the only complete surviving whipstaff steering system, a vertical lever able to put 23 degrees of angle on the rudder.
Ten August 1628
In the summer of 1628 Captain Söfring Hansson, who supervised the ship's construction, arranged a stability demonstration for Vice Admiral Fleming. Thirty men ran back and forth across the upper deck to start her rolling; the admiral stopped the test after three trips for fear she would capsize. According to the testimony of the ship's master, Göran Mattson, Fleming remarked that he wished the king were at home. Gustavus Adolphus, campaigning in Poland, had been sending a steady stream of letters insisting the ship be put to sea as soon as possible.
She sailed on 10 August 1628 for the naval station at Älvsnabben, gunports open and guns run out for a salute. Under the bluffs of what is now Södermalm a gust filled her sails and heeled her hard to port; she righted as it passed. At Tegelviken a stronger gust pushed the open lower gunports under the surface. Water poured onto the lower gundeck and down into the hold, and Vasa sank to 32 m only 120 m from shore, roughly 1,300 m into her maiden voyage. Thirty people died, in full view of a crowd of hundreds if not thousands, including foreign ambassadors.
A full inquest sat at the Royal Palace on 5 September 1628 before members of the Privy Council and Admiralty, with the Admiral of the Realm, Carl Carlsson Gyllenhielm, present. Crewmen and contractors blamed each other and no one accepted fault; asked why the ship sank, de Groote answered that only God knew. No one was punished. The real cause was that too much weight sat too high: the hull above the waterline was too tall and too heavily built for the amount of hull in the water. Workmen had even used two different rulers, Swedish feet on one side and Amsterdam feet on the other, leaving her heavier to port.
Raised after 333 years
A contract to raise the ship was signed within three days of the disaster, and the English engineer Ian Bulmer succeeded only in righting her and wedging her more firmly in the mud. In 1663-1665 Albreckt von Treileben and Andreas Peckell brought Swedish and Finnish divers down with a simple diving bell and recovered more than fifty of the valuable bronze guns, breaking up much of the weather deck to reach them. Interest then faded, though the wreck stayed on 19th-century harbour charts of Stockholm. In the 1950s Anders Franzén reasoned that the cold brackish Baltic was free of shipworm, and in 1956 a home-made coring probe found her.
The recovery used essentially the method attempted in 1628. Divers spent two years cutting six tunnels beneath the hull with high-pressure water jets, working in total darkness with hundreds of tonnes of mud-filled ship overhead, and made more than 1,300 dives without a serious accident. Steel cables were run through to lifting pontoons, and in eighteen lifts during August and September 1959 the ship was walked from 32 m up to 16 m at Kastellholmsviken. The final lift began on 8 April 1961; on the morning of 24 April her timbers broke the surface before 400 invited guests and the world's press.
Over 600 cubic metres of oak posed a conservation problem without precedent. After debate, the hull was impregnated with polyethylene glycol, sprayed for seventeen years and then dried slowly - a treatment since used as standard for large waterlogged timbers, including the Mary Rose. The polluted water that had preserved her also left trouble behind: sulfides in the wood react with atmospheric oxygen, and by 2002 the sulfuric acid in the hull was estimated at more than two tonnes. Galvanised replacement bolts were swapped between 2011 and 2018 for high-alloy stainless steel, and in 2023 the museum announced a new cradle and internal support skeleton costing 150 million kronor.
What Sweden made of her
Between her recovery in 1961 and the beginning of 2025 more than 45 million people have seen Vasa. In the 20th century she became a widely recognised symbol of the stormaktstiden, the Swedish great-power period, and was used deliberately to market Sweden abroad. The maritime archaeologist Carl-Olof Cederlund, who worked on the Vasa projects, called the phenomenon regalskepps-syndromet, the royal ship syndrome, tying it to a nationalist strand in the history of ideas and to older traditions about hero-kings and glory won in war; he has compared the museum on crown land at Djurgården to a temple in the classical sense.
The archaeology earned the attention. Excavators recovered the remains of at least fifteen people along with clothing, weapons, tools, coins, cutlery, food, drink and six of the ship's ten sails, and the site itself was worked over from 1963 to 1967 for sculptures, anchors and the 11.7 m longboat. Vasa is today the world's best-preserved 17th-century ship, and her rigging finds alone outnumber the combined totals from the Mary Rose, the Red Bay wreck, La Belle and Santo Antonio de Tanna. Within twenty years of the sinking Sweden stopped hiring Dutch shipwrights in favour of English yards, which drew plans and built models before building ships.
The popular reading of her loss as a botched and disorganised project is not historically founded, but it has had a long career: management writers use the 'Vasa syndrome' as a lesson in how not to run an organisation, and the Manhattan Project engineer Arthur Squires opened The Tender Ship with it. The museum has co-sponsored two documentaries by Anders Wahlgren, and a third film premiered on Swedish television in late 2011. A 308-tonne pastiche of the ship was built in Tokyo in 1991 as a 650-passenger sightseeing vessel. Among the finds on the wreck was a statue of the Finnish runner Paavo Nurmi, planted there as a student prank the night before the final lift.
