Châteaux de Lastours

The Châteaux de Lastours are four linked medieval fortifications on a rocky crest above the village of Lastours in Aude, southern France. Built on a narrow north–south spur, the group (Cabaret, Tour Régine, Surdespine and Quertinheux) forms a single defended ensemble though each castle is a separate structure.

The shape it held in its prime.

Four ruined fortifications sit along a narrow rocky crest about 400 m long and 50 m wide, aligned north–south above deep wooded valleys. The principal citadel (Cabaret) shows a polygonal south keep, a north tower and crenellated curtain walls of irregular masonry; nearby stands a round royal tower (Tour Régine) of white limestone with a collapsed short curtain. Surdespine retains a square tower and arched window openings, while Quertinheux crowns an isolated pinnacle with a round tower and polygonal curtain.
