As it stood in 930

What Donaustauf Castle looked like in its prime.

Perched on a steep, tree-covered conical spur above the Danube, the castle is a compact pale-stone complex: long, low curtain walls step along the ridge and descend the slopes, while a taller rectangular summit hall/keep with large arched window openings and a ruined gable dominates the summit. Masonry appears light grey-beige rubble with ashlar around openings; terraces and the remnants of a lower outer bailey fall away to the northeast. At its prime the circuit would have been continuous and the halls roofed.

Its story

The story of Donaustauf Castle.

Donaustauf Castle is a ruined hill castle set at 424 metres above sea level on a spur overlooking the River Danube, by the market village of Donaustauf in the Upper Palatine county of Regensburg, Bavaria. The site overlays much earlier Celtic and early-medieval fortifications, and the market village itself grew up during the Middle Ages under the protection of the castle's mighty fortifications.

Since 6 April 1986 the castle ruins have belonged to Donaustauf, and from 1997 the municipality had the castle made safe and renovated; the stabilised ruins remain in municipal care today.
