Frankenstein Castle

Frankenstein Castle (Burg Frankenstein) is a hilltop medieval castle on a rocky spur of the Odenwald near Darmstadt in southern Hesse, Germany. Built in the 13th century and enlarged in the early 15th century, it stands as a mix of ruined curtain walls and a surviving square tower now topped with a steep slate roof.

The shape it held in its prime.

Perched on a rocky spur above forested valleys, the castle presents rough dark fieldstone curtain walls with areas of crumbled masonry and arched gateways. A tall square tower rises from the bailey, its corners trimmed in pinkish sandstone and capped by a steep pyramidal slate roof with triangular dormer openings. Low battlemented walls enclose an inner courtyard with external stone steps and terraces; vegetation grows along some ruined wall-tops. Stonework is predominantly irregular rubble with ashlar window surrounds.
