Blackwater Castle
Blackwater Castle (formerly Castle Widenham) is a privately owned castle estate near Castletownroche in north County Cork, Ireland, with structural origins from the 12th century and substantial 15th-century additions. The site includes medieval towers, curtain walls, a courtyard with outbuildings and a later fortified mansion; it remains one of the oldest continuously occupied castle sites in Ireland.

A tall, square stone keep with narrow vertical windows and crenellated parapet stands attached to a long, two-storey rendered mansion block capped by a machicolated-style crenellated parapet. The keep’s rough grey masonry contrasts with the pale, limewashed facade of the residential range. Low medieval curtain walls and ancillary outbuildings form a courtyard; broad lawns and mature trees surround the complex. Rooflines are dominated by battlements and rectangular towers, all intact and continuously occupied in this period.

The site, the ancient promontory fort of Dun Cruadha, occupied since the Mesolithic, was fortified in the late 12th century by Alexander and Raymond FitzHugh, Cambro-Norman grandsons of Maurice FitzGerald, after the Norman invasion of Ireland. When Alexander's daughter Synolda married David de la Roche, the barony of Fermoy became Roche Country, and the castle remained in Roche hands for almost 500 years.
In 1666 it passed to Colonel John Widenham, becoming Castle Widenham, and stayed within the Widenham line until the 1960s, when Sir Delaval Cotter, 6th Baronet of Rockforest, bought it with his wife and restored the tower before selling in 1976. After several further owners the estate passed to the Nordstrom Family Trust in 1991, and as Blackwater Castle it now hosts weddings, private events and family gatherings.
Because it was held by the politically powerful Roches and then the wealthy Widenhams for some eight centuries between them, much heritage survives on site: a late-12th-century round tower, a 13th-century watch tower and sentry walk, a 15th-century keep, medieval defence walls, a Sheela na Gig, St Patrick's Holy Well, and the medieval Book of Fermoy, now housed in the Royal Irish Academy.
