Spike Island

Inis Píc

Spike Island is a 42-hectare island in Cork Harbour dominated by an early 19th-century bastion fortress (Fort Mitchel) that later housed a large convict prison. The site comprises massive stone curtain walls, gun emplacements, casemates, barrack blocks and magazines clustered around a central parade ground and gateway.

What Spike Island looked like in its prime.

A low, fortress silhouette of grey dressed stone and brick: a continuous high curtain wall pierced by a central semicircular-arched gateway beneath a raised flagpole, broad ramparts and artillery platforms, rows of small barred windows in slate-roofed barrack ranges, and buttressed casemate faces with arched embrasures. The interior contains a broad gravelled parade ground ringed by two-storey stone blocks, bombproof vaulted casemates, and earth-backed magazines, all tightly packed on the island's leveled summit.
