Blackrock Castle

Blackrock Castle is a castellated fortification on the banks of the River Lee near Cork city. The present neo-gothic complex around a prominent round water-tower largely dates from the 1828–1829 rebuilding and today houses an observatory, visitor centre and restaurant.

The shape it held in its prime.

Dominated by a tall cylindrical tower rising directly from the river-facing stone quay, with crenellated parapet and narrow vertical windows, the castle is a compact neo‑Gothic courtyard complex of connected ranges and lower round and square turrets. Walls are pale grey block and rubble masonry with irregular coursing; rooflines are mostly hidden behind battlements. The tower shows multiple stepped storeys with small rectangular and arched openings. Setting: built on the river bank above a rocky, grassy shoreline.
