What Kildare Castle looked like in its prime.

At its prime the site read as a compact Norman motte-and-bailey: a steep, earthen motte topped by a freestanding keep tower, beside a roughly enclosed bailey set on lower ground. The motte's slope rises from a surrounding ditch to a summit platform bearing a stout masonry tower; the bailey is defined by an embanked edge and timber palisade, with low timber outbuildings and simple pitched roofs clustered along the inner fence. The silhouette is dominated by the tower on the mound.

Its story

The story of Kildare Castle.

Kildare Castle was built in the 12th century by Richard de Clare, 2nd Earl of Pembroke, as a Norman motte-and-bailey castle at Kildare in County Kildare — a raised motte with an adjoining bailey.

The castle is now a ruin: the remains of a tower are the only part of it still visible above ground.
