Loughmoe Castle
Loughmoe Castle is a medieval tower-house near Loughmore village in County Tipperary, long the ancestral seat of the Purcell family. The surviving core is a four-storey 13th‑century tower-house with lower 17th‑century domestic additions; today it stands as a ruin on flat lowland close to the River Suir.

A tall rectangular four-storey medieval tower-house sits as the central mass, with lower, later 17th‑century ranges attached to one side; the silhouette is dominated by the vertical tower rising above the adjoining low roofs. Walls are rough masonry punctured by narrow vertical slit windows on the upper levels and larger rectangular openings in the later wing. The group stands on flat agricultural ground beside a small village with the River Suir visible across the fields in the distance.

Loughmoe Castle, by Loughmore village four kilometres south of Templemore in County Tipperary, was the ancestral home of the Purcell family, Barons of Loughmoe. The land was granted to Sir Hugh Purcell in 1204 as a dowry from Beatrix FitzWalter's father, Theobald FitzWalter, and the first Baron of Loughmoe was given his title by James Butler, first Earl of Ormonde, a descendant of Theobald.
The surviving core is a four-storey 13th-century tower-house, to which the Purcells added lower domestic ranges in the seventeenth century. The family lived at Loughmoe until around 1760; the last Baron, Nicholas Purcell of Loughmoe, had died in March 1722, ending the Barony. The castle now stands as a ruin on flat lowland close to the River Suir.
