What Sverresborg looked like in its prime.
A compact fortified compound defined by an irregular outer curtain of roughly dressed gray stone enclosing a cluster of low wooden buildings with steeply pitched roofs. The stone wall forms a continuous perimeter with earthen ramparts behind it; within are timber longhalls and service ranges with simple gabled profiles and small window openings. Overall silhouette reads as a low, squat stone enclosure pierced by a single main approach and crowded with dark wooden rooflines.
Its story
The story of Sverresborg.
Sverresborg in Bergen was founded by King Sverre Sigurdsson in the mid-1180s, a fortress and former castle of the Norwegian crown. Its arrangement set an outer stone curtain around inner timber buildings, and it was repeatedly rebuilt through the centuries.
Directly beneath the fortress lies the residence of the master of the ramparts, the Vollmesterboligen, the oldest parts of which go back to the 18th century. The site remains a military area, open to the public.
