Royal Castle, Poznań
The Royal Castle in Poznań is a medieval brick castle begun c.1249 by Przemysł I and expanded into a large royal residence by the early 14th century. Largely destroyed in World War II, parts were rebuilt in the mid-20th century and further reconstruction has been undertaken since 2010. Today it houses a museum and retains restored medieval walls and a rebuilt tower integrated with later Raczyński buildings.

A compact, rectangular red-brick palace block about three storeys high attached to a tall, square keep tower; steep red-tiled roofs and prominent stepped gables punctuate the skyline. The tower rises above the main block with a broad machicolated crown and crenellations; narrow high windows and arched window pairs run along the main façade. Walls are solid red brick with visible bonded courses; the complex stands on a defensible hill and was surrounded by city walls and ramparts at its prime.

The Royal Castle in Poznań dates from 1249 and the reign of Przemysł I, who built its tower; a small ducal residence was incorporated into the city walls in the late 13th century, joined by a huge building 63 metres long with three levels and a basement. Przemysł II was born in the castle in 1257, and Elisabeth Richeza of Poland in 1288.
From the reign of Władysław I the Elbow-high the castle served as the residence of the starosta generalny of Greater Poland. The peace treaty between Casimir III of Poland and John I of Bohemia was signed here in 1337; royal weddings followed, including Casimir III's to Adelajda of Hesse in 1341, and visitors ranged from Jadwiga and Władysław II Jagiełło in 1386 to Henry de Valois in 1574. The castle later housed the Court of Appeals and served as the State Archive until 1939.
Largely destroyed in the Second World War, the castle was partly rebuilt in the mid-20th century, with further reconstruction undertaken since 2010. Today it houses a museum, its restored medieval walls and rebuilt tower integrated with the later Raczyński buildings.
