Poznań through the ages
Poznań is a city on the River Warta in west Poland, within the Greater Poland region. The city is an important cultural and business center and one of Poland's most populous regions with many regional customs such as Saint John's Fair, traditional Saint Martin's croissants and a local dialect. Among its most important heritage sites are the Renaissance Old Town, Town Hall and Poznań Cathedral.

Renaissance Poznań
Poznań in 1560 stands at the height of its role as a trade hub between east and west, its streets full of goods, barges and foreign merchants. The rebuilt Renaissance town hall dominates the Old Market with its arcades and clockwork goats; beyond it the brick towers of the cathedral mark Ostrów Tumski and the Warta carries grain, furs and fish to the city.
Rooflines of red clay tile and steep gables crowd a compact market town of painted plaster and pale brick, pierced by church spires and the squat brick towers of Ostrów Tumski. Narrow lanes give on to a broad arcaded market; timber-framed workshops sit beside new masonry facades after the great fire. Along the Warta wooden quays and barges form a busy waterfront while town walls and an observation tower rim the compact urban profile.
