Branxholme Castle
Branxholme Castle is a Scottish Borders seat long associated with Clan Scott, centered on a sixteenth-century five-storey tower house later incorporated into a larger mansion. The building was extensively remodelled in 1837 and remained a private residence; it was renovated and reoccupied in 2017. It stands above a road and river, set into dense mixed woodland with lawns and former gardens.

A tall five-storey rectangular tower at one end linked into a longer two- or three-storey mansion range of pale grey ashlar stone; steep slate roofs punctuated by several tall, slender grouped chimney stacks; regular rows of mullioned and sash windows across the façade; the house sits on a terrace above a road and river with a broad lawn in front and dense mixed woodland rising immediately behind; at prime the fabric is complete and regularly maintained.

Branxholme stands on land held by Clan Scott since 1420. The Earl of Northumberland burned the first castle in 1532, and its replacement held out against the English in the War of the Rough Wooing in 1547. On 20 April 1570 an English army under the Earl of Sussex and Lord Hunsdon arrived — recording "a very strong house and well set, and very pleasant gardens and orchards about it" — and completed the work of demolition with gunpowder.
The present castle is built around a sixteenth-century tower house of five storeys, with vaulted basement chambers and a newel stair, altered and incorporated into a later mansion; William Burn extensively remodelled it in 1837 for the 5th Duke of Buccleuch.
The house runs through Border verse: Walter Scott, 1st Lord Scott of Buccleuch, was the "bauld Buccleuch" of the ballad Kinmont Willie, and Sir Walter Scott's Lay of the Last Minstrel celebrates Baron Henry of Cranston winning the hand of Lady Margaret of Branksome Hall. Renovated in 2017 by Carol Shanley and Brian Desport, it is now a family home operating as a wedding venue, spa, café and guest lodging.
