Lucerne through the ages
Lucerne or Luzern is a city and a municipality in central Switzerland, in the German-speaking portion of the country. Lucerne is the capital of the canton of Lucerne and part of the district of the same name. With a population of approximately 82,000 people, Lucerne is the most populous city in Central Switzerland, and a nexus of economics, transport, culture, and media in the region.

City of the Wooden Bridges
A compact Catholic market republic straddling the outflow of Lake Lucerne, its streets threaded by the great roofed wooden bridges and ringed by the Musegg fortifications. This walk crosses both covered bridges, moves through the busy river quays and market squares, and climbs to the town wall and nearby heights beneath Pilatus's snow-capped ridge.
Stone towers and timber frames crowd a narrow riverside town where two long, roofed wooden bridges span the Reuss; the Kapellbrücke leans diagonally with its round stone Wasserturm, the Spreuerbrücke sits nearer the upstream mills. Roofs are steep and clay-tiled, façades often oiled or painted with heraldry, market stalls cluster by the quays, small barques tack on the lake, and the Musegg wall's nine towers punctuate the northern skyline below snowy Pilatus.
