London Coliseum

The London Coliseum is an Edwardian large-capacity theatre in St Martin's Lane, Westminster, opened in 1904 and designed by Frank Matcham. Built as a grand variety theatre, it features a vast three-tier auditorium, richly decorated circulation spaces and a prominent corner tower; today it is the London home of the English National Opera and English National Ballet.

What London Coliseum looked like in its prime.

A broad, buff-coloured stone façade articulated by paired columns, arched windows and balustraded galleries; carved cartouches, sculptural groups and domed canopies punctuate the elevation. Three ornate wooden entrance doors sit beneath carved stone arches at street level. A tall, cylindrical colonnaded tower rises above the corner, capped by an open-work metal globe. Glazed domed roof sections and polished marble-faced foyer areas complete the compact, richly detailed Edwardian theatre composition in freshly cut stone.
