National Portrait Gallery
The National Portrait Gallery in London is a public art gallery holding portraits of historically important and famous British people. Founded in 1856, it moved to its present Portland stone building on St Martin's Place in 1896 and was comprehensively refurbished and redisplayed, reopening in 2023.

A broad, classical Portland stone façade two storeys high with a deep cornice and dentil course; the ground floor has rusticated ashlar with three large entrance bays accessed by wide shallow steps and a small public forecourt bearing a low stone plinth reading “National Portrait Gallery.” The piano nobile features a row of paired arched windows set in columned reveals with carved roundels and sculpted founder busts above the central doorway. Plane trees shade the pavement; new tall bronze entrance doors mark the main access.
