Lyceum Theatre

The Lyceum Theatre is a West End theatre on Wellington Street, central London, notable for its giant classical portico and an auditorium rebuilt and richly ornamented in the early 20th century. Opened in its present form in 1834 and remodelled in 1904, it has long housed large-scale drama and musicals and retains a multi-tiered auditorium with a distinctive overhanging balcony above the dress circle.

A broad, cream‑painted Neoclassical façade dominated by a six-column Corinthian portico and triangular pediment bearing the name 'Lyceum'; the portico set on a raised stone base with deep recessed arches behind the columns. Behind the portico rises a pale stucco theatre block with tall sash openings. Inside, the auditorium is a multi-tiered Rococo‑ornamented space: profuse gilded plasterwork, red velvet upholstery, several horseshoe tiers and a balcony that uniquely overhangs the dress circle above a large orchestra pit.
