The Theatre Royal

The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane is a West End theatre on Catherine Street in Covent Garden, London. The current grade I listed building opened in 1812 on the site of earlier playhouses dating back to 1663 and contains a traditional auditorium with pit, tiers of boxes and a proscenium stage.

A large, pale stuccoed neoclassical block with a broad entablature bearing the theatre name, tall smooth walls punctuated by vertical sash windows and shallow recessed panels. A deep, columned porch/portico shelters the main entrance, set on a raised stone plinth with iron railings along the pavement. The building reads as a massive rectangular theatre house with a flat parapet roofline and occasional decorative lamp standards by the pavement; scale is urban and closely fronting the street.
