Champ de Mars

The Champ de Mars is a long rectangular public greenspace in Paris's 7th arrondissement, lying between the Eiffel Tower to the northwest and the École Militaire to the southeast. Historically a military drill ground, it is laid out as a formal sequence of lawns, alleys and tree-lined terraces and is used for public gatherings and exhibitions.

A broad axial greensward 780 metres long, divided into rectilinear lawn panels and gravel promenades, flanked by symmetrical rows of trees and curved planting beds. At the northwest terminus the newly erected iron-lattice Eiffel Tower rises above the park; at the southeast end the stone classical façade of the École Militaire forms a formal terminus. Paths, small paved rond-points and low stone terraces step beside the lawns; colours are pale gravel, deep green grass and the dark iron silhouette of the tower.
