The abbey rises in layered stone terraces from fortifications and village buildings at the rock's base up to a tall central church spire, forming a single walkable, bounded site combining religious, defensive and domestic structures.

A compact, multi-tiered granite complex rising from a steep rocky island: thick, warm-beige stone walls and crenellated fortifications at the lowest tiers; tightly packed slate roofs and small village houses mid-slope; and above them a large abbey church with a steep slate roof, Gothic pinnacles and a tall, slender spire topped by a gilded figure. Vegetation clings to the rock; narrow stair ramps and terraces step up the slope. The whole silhouette reads as vertical layers of masonry against sky.
