Montmartre Cemetery

Cimetière de Montmartre

The Cemetery of Montmartre (Cimetière de Montmartre), officially Cimetière du Nord, is an 11-hectare necropolis in Paris's 18th arrondissement opened in 1825. Laid out in the hollow of former gypsum quarries, it contains dense rows of 19th-century family tombs, chapels and mausolea and is spanned by the iron Pont Caulaincourt.

What Montmartre Cemetery looked like in its prime.

A compact, hill-sheltered necropolis of closely packed stone and marble family tombs, low rectangular mausolea and occasional domed chapels; colours of pale grey limestone, weathered bronze plaques and darker granite slab graves. Narrow gravel avenues thread between stacked monuments; many roofs and cornices show green moss. The cemetery is visually crossed by a metal road bridge (Pont Caulaincourt) above its terraces; mature deciduous trees rise intermittently from the plots.
