Aquincum

Aquincum was a major Roman city and legionary base on the right bank of the Danube where modern Óbuda (Budapest) now stands. At its height in the 2nd–3rd centuries AD it combined a fortified castrum, a civilian town with streets, baths, workshops and houses, two amphitheatres, and aqueduct infrastructure. Today the site is an excavated archaeological park with exposed foundations and partial standing masonry interpreted in the Aquincum Museum.

What Aquincum looked like in its prime.

In AD 200 Aquincum reads as a compact Roman town of pale stone and brick, its grid of paved streets flanked by single- and two-storey houses with whitewashed plaster and red terracotta roofs, public baths with vaulted brick chambers and hypocausts, two stone amphitheatres of concentric tiers, a fortified castrum with thick ashlar curtain walls and towers, and a multi-tiered aqueduct carrying a stone water channel across the landscape.
