Heroes' Square

Hősök tere

Heroes' Square (Hősök tere) is Budapest's large ceremonial square dominated by the Millennium Monument: a 36-metre fluted column topped by the archangel Gabriel and a base group of seven mounted Magyar chieftains, backed by two semicircular colonnades with fourteen historical statues and relief panels. The square is flanked by the neoclassical Museum of Fine Arts and the Hall of Art (Műcsarnok) and opens onto Andrássy Avenue and City Park.

What Heroes' Square looked like in its prime.

A vast paved rectangular forecourt with geometric stone inlay centers on a tall fluted stone column crowned by a bronze archangel holding a crown and double cross. At the column base is a clustered bronze group of seven mounted chieftains on stone plinths. Behind the column two matching semicircular limestone colonnades rise in a low arc, each with seven full‑height bronze statues in niches and relief panels beneath. Neoclassical museum façades bookend the square; bronzes show green verdigris against pale stone.
