Venetian Arsenal

Arsenale di Venezia

The Venetian Arsenal is a vast complex of shipyards, workshops and armories in eastern Venice that produced and maintained the Venetian Republic's fleets. In its prime it combined long covered slipways, basins and specialised workshops inside crenellated red-brick walls to manufacture galleys, rigging and artillery on an unprecedented scale.

What Venetian Arsenal looked like in its prime.

A vast, contiguous complex enclosed by high crenellated red-brick walls and watch towers; wide water-gates open onto basins and canals lined with white Istrian stone plinths. Long low-roofed sheds and covered slipways (squeri) sit along the docks, with very long ropewalk buildings (corderie) and separate masonry workshops and foundries. Monumental stone portals and marble lions mark ceremonial gates; timber cranes, wooden footbridges and moored galleys fill the basins. Surfaces are primarily red brick, timber roofs and pale stone detailing.
