Saint Isaac's Cathedral

Saint Isaac's Cathedral is a large neoclassical cathedral in Saint Petersburg with a dominant gilded central dome and four subsidiary domes, set on a Greek-cross plan. Completed in the mid-19th century, the building is faced with gray and pink stone, ringed by many single-block red granite columns, and contains richly finished interior spaces including a rotunda, nave, side chapels and an iconostasis framed by semiprecious stone columns.

What Saint Isaac's Cathedral looked like in its prime.

Massive neoclassical silhouette dominated by a gilded central dome on a high drum, flanked by four smaller gilded domes; facades of pale gray and pink ashlar with broad flights of steps leading to four pedimented octastyle porticos. A total of 112 single-block red granite Corinthian columns punctuate the exterior; bronze relief doors sit beneath sculpted pediments. Rooflines are articulated with greenish bronze statuary and balustrades. Inside, multicoloured granites and marbles, semiprecious malachite and lazurite columns, and a high dome oculus define the principal volumes.
