Peter and Paul Fortress

The Peter and Paul Fortress is the original citadel of Saint Petersburg, founded by Peter the Great in 1703. The star-shaped fortress on Hare Island contains the Peter and Paul Cathedral with its tall gilded spire, bastions including the Trubetskoy Bastion (used as a prison), the mint, and other clustered buildings, and has been a museum complex since the 1920s.

What Peter and Paul Fortress looked like in its prime.

A low star-shaped fort of earthen ramparts faced with stone and long granite-faced quay walls along the Neva; within the walls rows of red-tiled roofs and pale yellow Baroque buildings clustered around the Peter and Paul Cathedral. The cathedral’s multi-stage tower rises to a very tall, slender gilded spire topped with a gilded angel. Bastion walls, tree-lined inner courtyards and the Kronverk across the narrow strait complete the riverside silhouette.
