Puerta del Sol

Puerta del Sol is the central public square of Madrid and the symbolic kilometre zero of Spain's radial road network. The square is ringed by uniform 18th–19th century buildings and contains several well-known urban markers: the Real Casa de Correos with its tower clock, the Km.0 plaque in the pavement, the Bear and the Strawberry Tree statue, and the equestrian statue of Charles III.

What Puerta del Sol looked like in its prime.

A broad semicircular paved plaza ringed by continuous rows of four- to five-storey 18th–19th‑century buildings with pale stucco facades, regular wrought‑iron balconies and flat or low-pitched roofs. The south side is anchored by the three-storey Real Casa de Correos with a central clock tower. Near the plaza centre stands a bronze equestrian statue of Charles III on a high stone plinth; the tiled Kilómetro Cero plaque is set into the pavement. Streetlamps, small ornamental fountains, the Oso y el Madroño sculpture and a neon Tío Pepe billboard mark the edges.
