Main Square

Plaza Mayor de Madrid

The Plaza Mayor is Madrid’s principal rectangular public square, fully enclosed by uniform three‑storey residential blocks with arcaded ground floors. It measures about 129 by 94 metres and is dominated by a central bronze equestrian statue of Philip III. The square has ten historical entrances and long rows of balconies overlooking the cobbled open space.

What Main Square looked like in its prime.

A large rectangular cobbled plaza enclosed on all sides by continuous three‑storey red‑plastered residential façades with regularly spaced white‑trimmed windows and iron balconies. Ground floors form a continuous arcade of granite pillars and large round archways; slate mansard roofs with dormer windows cap the blocks. The north side is marked by the Casa de la Panadería with its twin towers and carved stone emblem; a bronze equestrian statue on a stone pedestal stands at the plaza’s exact centre, surrounded by an iron rail.
