Almudena Cathedral

Catedral de la Almudena

The Cathedral of Saint Mary the Royal of the Almudena is the Roman Catholic cathedral of Madrid, located opposite the Royal Palace. Built from the late 19th century and completed in the late 20th, it combines a neoclassical and baroque exterior with a predominantly neo‑Gothic interior and serves as the seat of the Archdiocese of Madrid.

What Almudena Cathedral looked like in its prime.

A broad, pale stone block mass with a double colonnaded portico flanked by two tall tower pavilions and a large dark‑slate domed drum rising behind. The exterior stone ranges from grey‑white to warm cream with carved reliefs, bronze doors and granite column bases; statues line the roofline and plinths. A wide paved forecourt and imperial steps lead to the entrance, and the dome’s slate roof and lantern punctuate the Madrid skyline.
