Compact rectangular stone keep of roughly three storeys with a crenellated parapet and flagpole on the roof, attached to a lower, crenellated round tower to the left by a short curtain wall. Walls built of grey-brown rubble stone with small rectangular windows (some with red-painted surrounds) and narrow musket/gun slits near the base. The castle is built directly on a jagged rocky shoreline with the estuary in front and a dense wooded slope rising immediately behind it.

Kingswear Castle was built between 1491 and 1502 to protect Dartmouth harbour in Devon against the threat of French attack — one of the first purpose-built artillery forts in Britain, a compact stone keep set on a rocky outcrop at the water's edge.
By the end of the 16th century improvements in the range of artillery had already reduced its utility. It took part in the English Civil War and remained armed until the early 18th century, then fell into ruin before being restored as a summer house in 1855.
In 1955 the castle was bought by Sir Frederic Bennett, newly elected MP for Torquay, who made it a private residence and constituency base. On his retirement from politics in 1987 he sold it to the Landmark Trust, which restored the ground floor to its original appearance, recreated the flat lead roof, and runs it as a holiday let.
